Slight loss of gilt in lettering & decorations on the cover. this is a "sample book", otherwise known as a salesman's sample. It contains a selection of pages from the actual book, with blank ruled pages at the rear, to sign up purchasers. Inside the back cover is an alternative spine, demonstrating another binding you could order on the book. In this case, the binding on the book is green cloth with gilt lettering & decorations, and the sample in the back is red leather with gilt lettering. Think late 19th & early 20th centures, most of the population is rural, with farmers wives selling books to neighbors to buy a new sewing machine.; Salesman's Dummy; 7x9 1/2"
